Not only must it be made at home, one of the ingredients is a bit obscure for the traditional grocery shopper. Of course the tea requires that one acquire a Kombucha mushroom culture, or starter mushroom. These can be purchased from a specialty shop, several of which can be found on the internet. They can also be acquired from someone who already brews their own tea. Once a batch of tea is started, it becomes necessary to harvest a bit of the mushroom as a starter for the next batch. It is quite common to harvest a starter culture for a friend who wishes to start producing their own tea.

Another thing to note, however, is that you will not have tea instantly available to drink even after you get your mushroom culture. Make the tea according to the instructions received with the mushroom. However, whatever instructions you use, you will find that the tea mixture will have to ferment over the course of several days. If you do not wait until this period is complete, you will find that the tea tastes disgusting. So be cautious about creating this mix and following the instructions carefully.
